Digital Temperature Controller Overview
What is a PID Controller?
A PID controller stands for "Proportional, Integral, Derivative." Here's how each component functions:
Proportional: Addresses the current variance in temperature.
Integral: Accounts for the accumulated past variances in temperature.
Derivative: Predicts future variances in temperature.
Together, these components use a formula that helps the actual temperature closely match the set temperature, minimizing overshoot and undershoot.
Differences Between Type-J, Type-K Thermocouples, and PT100-RTD Sensors
All three sensors accurately control heating products but differ in their mechanisms and applications:
Thermocouples: Consist of two wires made from different metals, welded together at the sensing end. A millivolt voltage is created with temperature changes, which the controller interprets to determine the temperature.
Type-J Thermocouples: Suitable for temperatures up to 1,400°F (760°C).
Type-K Thermocouples: Suitable for higher temperature ranges up to 2,300°F (1,260°C) and perform better in moist conditions.
RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector): Uses resistors that change resistance with temperature changes. "PT100" indicates a resistance of 100 ohms at 32°F (0°C). RTDs can control temperatures up to about 1,560°F (850°C).
Voltage Compatibility
The controller can accept any AC-output voltage between 100 and 240 volts. Users must ensure their heating products' operating voltages match the power source.
Connector Compatibility
If you don't have the proper connector to link your heater to the controller, the controller includes an extra C14 plug that matches the C13 input receptacle. Simply install this plug on your heater.
Safety Features
The controller features an audible alarm that activates if temperatures fall outside programmed parameters, ensuring safety if the heater gets too hot or too cold.
Usage in Wet Areas or Outdoors
This controller is not suitable for use in wet areas or outdoors.
Included Accessories
The controller includes everything you need: a power cord and a 5 ft (1.5 m) sensor. No additional accessories are required; simply install the provided plug to your heater.
Agency Approvals
The controller's safety-critical components, enclosures, and materials are UL Listed/Recognized. cULus and CE certifications are pending.
NEMA and IP Rating
The controller is rated NEMA 1 and IP30, indicating protection against limited dust ingress and standard indoor conditions.
