Metronidazole is a limited spectrum antibiotic that actively deters the growth of protozoa, anaerobic gram-positive, and anaerobic gram-negative bacteria. The first use of this antibiotic was to suppress protozoans such as Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Trichomonas vaginalis.
